Apparently a wide number of phones are reporting text messages coming in from 2016 as of January 1st. At least one phone carrier is immune which leads experts to believe it's an issue with phone carriers, not with the phones themselves. But now, there's reports of a bank in OZ invalidating people's cards because it thinks they're from 2016 too!! In what was first reported as a cell phone bug, it seems that y2k16 is a real bug that could be popping up in many places. Basically what is happening is that January 1st, 2010 is being reported as January 1st, 2016... so you may get messages that look like this:
Some people speculate that it's due to binary code being translated incorrectly (‘010110’ is the binary code for 16) but that doesn't really make any sense. Likely it's just a bug somewhere in the systems that someone over looked. In the first report of this extending beyond cell phones, a bank in in QueensLand Oz is reporting their customers are having their cards invalidated due to the system thinking that it's 2016! Shops are forced to come up with "manual workarounds" to let people make their purchases because the banks have yet to fix this issue. So if you see 2016 pop up somewhere, don't be alarmed... you're not going crazy. Also, you may want to report it to what ever manufacturer/business you discover it from as it may be a costly little glitch. |
