Ever wish you could just type your search rather than having to tab over to that extra box? Ever wish you could search Google, Yahoo, IMDB, Youtube or any other site you want without having to select one of those as an option in that extra box? Well, it just so happens that Firefox comes with a very handy feature that gives you the ability to use any site's search box right from your address bar without having to be at that site.... here's how.... For this example, we'll use the ever popular Google but keep in mind, this works on any site that has a search box.
Go to www.google.com and right click on the search box you find there. In the context menu, choose Add a Keyword for this Search...". You'll get a popup that says "New Bookmark" but in reality this is so much more. Give it a name, any name... let's say, Google! Then the next box is your list of bookmarks and folders, put it where ever you like. Bookmark organization isn't my strong suit. The 3rd box is your golden ticket... it's the keyword you wish to use. Now, you can use anything you want, but I like to keep things simple so I used simply g. Press the Save button and you're now good to go. Click in your address bar and type 'g tycamtech' and you'll be directed straight to Google's search results for the term 'tycamtech'!! I do all my Google searches this way since I'm usually using the Address Bar anyway. I now have that secondary search bar hidden away, it's not used. Now you can do the same anywhere, go to IMDB.com and right click in their search box, give it a name, a bookmark and a keyword such as imdb and any time you need to find a movie or actor/actress, just type 'imdb movie name' into the address bar! Use it on your favorite forums, blogs, news sites... anything!! Its up to you! |
