It's fairly obvious where the term Style Sheets may come from since CSS is essentially a tool for styling the content on a website. It's general purpose is to take the images, text and other stuff on a page and style them such that it looks nice and works well in terms of navigation and flow.

But why did they add 'cascading' to the title? Once you learn why, and get used to it, you'll be very very glad they did!

If you've ever had to display a list of items on an HTML page, you've probably tried the <ol> and <ul> tags and opted to just make a list yourself with some spacing or tables or...  well, any method you can come up with other than using those list tags. They work great but, you are at their mercy with those big black dots, huge spaces and the indent is wild. But it does not have to be that way.

The best place to start when learning CSS is with the text on your page. The main reason for this is that you can very easily and quickly see the results of your actions but you can also learn methods that can be applied later when you move on to more complex lessons. In this article I am going to show you how to manage your font, the size, weight, color and more but I'm also going to show you how to add some spacing to it and even change it's position a little.

Before you can learn the terminology or the list of available attributes you can use, it helps to know how to get CSS working on your page. The absolute best way to to learn something is to try it yourself so for this article, we're going to dive right in to having real working CSS on your HTML page.

This is of course, assuming you have an HTML page to try this on. If not, take a few minutes to make up a rough basic page with some text on it. It doesn't have to be fancy but it does have to follow standard HTML rules and have some text on it.

Once you have that, I will tell you:

1. Where the CSS goes
2. The basic structure

I am writing this article under the assumption that you are a webmaster or at the very least would like to be one. You must have the basic understanding of HTML or what it is, because if you don't, I suggest you look elsewhere and then return when you're ready because CSS will seem extremely strange to you.

The reason I say this, and in a round about way describe what CSS actually is, is that CSS (Cascading Style Sheet) is a complimentary layer that sits just above your HTML and gives it pretty colours, shapes and in design... it's position. But you are in the 'Basics' section so we'll leave positioning out of it for now.

I will break this down in a few sections for you...

1. What CSS is: to give you a brief description of what it is and what it does.... and why I think you should learn to use it.
2. How it works: a general (not too technical) description of how it does what it does to the HTML document you are making.
3. Your future: an idea of what you'll be able to do with it if you keep learning.
